Chapter 156: Stunning Shot
Shangguan Qiao Yun stumble and fell, and immediately felt that today was going to be the day she died. There was no time for regrets, no time for any epiphany. She quickly turned the blade of the gun towards herself, intending to pierce her own heart. She wanted to take a good look at this world again, this world that had let her down time and time again, but one that she could not bear to leave.
A zombie fell around her, then another, and another, as a middle-sized figure stood behind her. She held the M1 lying on the ground, and turned to look at the man. He was wearing blue working clothes, with a few patches of clothes about him, looking incredibly tattered. A light shadow covered her, as she hid in his shadow, and looking at that indomitable spirit about him, a strong sense of security overcame her. She let go of the blade, letting it fall on the ground.
“What are you zoning out for, still not getting up? Waiting for me to carry you?” Zhang Xiao Qiang barked, and charged right for the D-Type. It lunged towards him together with another ordinary zombie, just as it was about to claw at him, as long as he lightly stepped back, the zombies would slash at thin air. However, Shangguan Qiao Yun was still behind him, blocking his way. He cursed under his breath and pulled out his handgun, striking the Beast Horn Spear at the mouth of the D-Type, while he lowered his right shoulders lightly, and the ordinary zombie only managed to claw at his outer clothes, tearing it away and revealing the yellowed beast skin.
Facing the ordinary zombie, the long spear would not be as useful. He loosened his grip on the Beast Horn Spear, allowing it to fall together with the D-Type. He turned his body around to evade the second slash from the zombie, while he pulled out the Jing Wei Sword from behind him and slashed down at the zombie, separating its head. Zhang Xiao Qiang then pulled out the Beast Horn Pike from his waist, and started to charge at the other zombies without so much as a second glance at Shangguan Qiao Yun.
Shangguan Qiao Yun gazed dumbfoundedly at him as he slaughtered the zombies, while staring at the dead zombies in front of her with the darts still stuck in their heads. She felt extremely hopeless, was she that useless? He had not even taken a look at her after saving her, was it because she had disappointed him? She was a woman, a beautiful one at that, and beauties were usually sensitive. However, she was not one to easily give up. Watching his back as he killed his way, she picked up her weapon and reloaded her M1. She fired a single shot at one nearby zombie, and after a loud ‘peng’, the zombie didn’t move anymore.
Shangguan Qiao Yun was using the M1 Carbine Rifle, however, her accuracy was no better than Zhang Xiao Qiang. Instead, when she switched over to the M1 Garand, it was slightly better. She had then switched over, and Zhang Xiao Qiang was ok with it. As long as she didn’t hit him, it was fine. As for accuracy? Would an entire cave full of bullets not be enough to train up her accuracy?
Just like this, the rest of the team also trained with 30 bullets per person each day. Shangguan Qiao Yun was allocated 300 bullets, but her accuracy was truly zilch, even after expending 2,000 rounds, Zhang Xiao Qiang had almost given up on her. Even when her index finger had swollen to the size of a carrot, even when she could only eat with her left hand, even after so much practice, she was still bad. That was why she was so hasty in trying to prove herself, and almost met with mishap.
“Peng…” 7 rounds were fired, and while the zombie had a few more bullet holes in it, it would not fall, instead, it continued to shamble over towards Shangguan Qiao Yun. Zhang Xiao Qiang was a distance away, hacking at one zombie. He turned to see her, and his gaze changed to one of contempt. He walked towards her, intending to help her finish off that zombie that just would not die. Suddenly, she turned and aimed at him, which wasn’t much, but what was worse was that she just turned her own head slightly, and before she even fully faced him, “Peng…” the Garand in her hands fired the last bullet towards his head.
He stared agape at the gun and the flash when the last bullet was fired. Before his brain could even react, the bullet grazed past his ear. He could not help but turn to see where the bullet flew to. To his shock, an S-Type had just jumped behind him, its large, black claws held high, intending to swipe down at him. It was stopped in mid-jump, falling back in an arch, with a blackened hole in its head. Black and yellowish matter flowed down from the wound as the S-Type landed on the ground with a loud crash.
It laid on the ground, its leg twitching. There were a few blackened bullet wounds on its chest. Near its body, there was a number of zombie bodies lying on the ground, and there was a trail of something that had crawled out from underneath them. It seemed that this S-Type had been hit by the bullets, and while the bullets had caused it to fall, before it could crawl up, it had been buried by the other normal zombies that were shot as well. It was small and weak, and when Zhang Xiao Qiang had walked past it, it had happened to be crawling out halfway. It had then leaped up to slash at Zhang Xiao Qiang’s head, who would have expected, Shangguan Qiao Yun instantly fired at it, the bullet entering its mouth and exiting the back of its head. Before it could even reached Zhang Xiao Qiang who was defenceless, it had been killed.
Zhang Xiao Qiang ruffled his buzz cut which he had recently just shaved, his heart cold. His clothes were all thickened with Mutant Beast hides, and in most circ.u.mstances, even an S2 would not be able to hurt him. However, his head had not a single shred of protection! Even each of his subordinates had some form of a helmet.
“What a close shave! I can’t pretend to be cool in the future!!” Zhang Xiao Qiang cursed at himself, and pulled out a dart to throw at the zombie near Shangguan Qiao Yun. He then turned around to clear the rest of the zombies. Of the 40-over zombies, Zhang Xiao Qiang alone had been responsible for eradicating half of them. The rest of the fighters had been split into a group of 3 and another group of 2. Everyone worked together to kill the zombies, and the speed was picking up. One would block the chest of a zombie, the other would use the blade to chop off the head. The zombies did not know how to evade or dodge, and it was actually easier and faster than killing sheeps. As long as they didn’t meet any S-Types, even a D-Type would fall under their tactics.
