IP Chapter 26.1
Incurable Pain | Chapter 26.1
Bai Xunyin and Yu Luoyin stood in front of Yu Shen’s office desk, with about a meter of distance separating them. The expressions on their faces were both unpleasant, each one worse than the other.
Yu Shen glanced at one, then at the other, feeling somewhat relieved but also finding it difficult to express his thoughts. He thought these two students must have stopped dating.
Having taught for decades, Yu Shen had encountered many cases of teenage romance. He knew well the signs of students who were ‘dating’ during their senior year. Typically, they would either act furtively, with bold ones exchanging flirtatious glances and timid ones darting their eyes around nervously. But the sweetness in their eyes and smiles couldn’t be hidden.
In any case, they wouldn’t exhibit the cold and hostile demeanor that these two students currently displayed.
Yu Shen was now more concerned about whether these two students had any unresolved issues than whether they were dating.
After some thought, he cautiously asked, “Both of you are in the same cla.s.s. In the last exam, Yu Luoyin ranked first and Bai Xunyin ranked third. Your performances were good. Have you ever discussed study-related issues together?”
Yu Shen’s inquiry was rather indirect, but Bai Xunyin immediately understood why she had been called over.
The girl hesitated for a moment, then shook her head without hesitation.
Her hurried attempt to distance herself made Yu Luoyin beside her look gloomy, his face growing darker as he remained silent.
If he were a bit more reckless, maybe he could get Bai Xunyin’s attention by acting a bit more aggressively in front of the teacher. Whether it was a look of disgust or a cold stare, at least she would look at him. She wouldn’t completely treat him like a harmful gas, ignoring him while leaving only disgust, as she did now, as if she wanted to avoid him at all costs.
—But Yu Luoyin couldn’t do that, he couldn’t, he still didn’t dare.
Just now, the word “hate” typed by the girl on the screen in the corridor felt like deep-seated thorns, causing his eyes to sting.
“No communication?” Yu Shen saw Bai Xunyin’s quick shake of the head and Yu Luoyin’s eerie silence. Feeling somewhat puzzled, he furrowed his brow. “Then why have I heard that you two always sit together at noon to discuss questions, whether you’re in front or behind each other?”
Bai Xunyin understood that someone had probably told the head teacher about her and Yu Luoyin’s ‘puppy love.’
Having followed the rules for over a decade of schooling, she was experiencing this kind of questioning for the first time. The inexperienced girl couldn’t help but feel a little nervous, her nails sinking deeply into her palms.
“Teacher, if you want to ask something, just ask directly. Don’t beat around the bush and waste time, we’re all high school seniors, who has the time.” Yu Luoyin lazily spoke up, glancing at his watch and pretending to be impatient. “Do you really think we look like we’re dating? Is it even possible for us to be dating?”
Yu Shen was momentarily speechless.
He couldn’t help but look at the two students in front of him again—they didn’t seem to have any connection to the sweet term ‘dating’ at this age, which should have been full of vitality. It seemed as if they were both under a dark cloud for some unknown reason, as if the term ‘dating’ had nothing to do with them.
Perhaps the pressure of being in senior year was too much? Maybe those rumors really couldn’t be trusted, after all, both of them were ‘excellent students’ who excelled in their studies.
After some thought, Yu Shen waved his hand wearily at them. “Alright, you two can go back to cla.s.s.”
Bai Xunyin breathed a sigh of relief. Unable to speak, she could only bow politely to Yu Shen before leaving the office without looking back.
Throughout the entire exchange, she didn’t spare a glance for the boy next to her.
Yu Luoyin took a deep breath, unable to resist squeezing his finger bones.
He was accustomed to this repet.i.tive action to calm himself down. By the time he pressed down on all ten fingers, his anger had subsided.
Because he didn’t feel like he was in the wrong, always carrying a foolish confidence, Yu Luoyin felt a bit at a loss for the first time.
He even felt a bit unsure about what to do with Bai Xunyin.
By the time evening self-study ended, the finger marks on his face had finally started to subside, leaving only faint traces of bruising that still looked somewhat alarming.
When Yu Luoyin returned home, Yu s.h.i.tian immediately noticed.
The recent chaos had made Yu Luoyin forget that today was Sat.u.r.day—Yu family’s usual dinner time.
He returned home and ‘unexpectedly’ heard Yu s.h.i.tian’s sharp voice, which made him instinctively furrow his brow.
“Cousin?” Sure enough, when Yu s.h.i.tian approached him and took a look, she covered her mouth and exclaimed in an exaggerated manner, “Oh my goodness, who hit your face?!”
Even Yu Luoyin had a day where he got hit? This was truly a rare sight! Yu s.h.i.tian’s loud exclamation immediately attracted the attention of the people around, and several elders gathered around—including Gu Yuan.
…
Yu Luoyin really felt like throwing Yu s.h.i.tian out.
The frustration and anger inside him could almost destroy the Earth. He frowned and tried to bypa.s.s the crowd to go upstairs, but it was too late.
Gu Yuan, in her high heels, made crisp ‘clacking’ noises as she walked up to him, carefully examining his face with her sharp, angry yet anxious eyes. Her voice slightly stern, she asked, “What happened?”
Yu Luoyin furrowed his brow and impatiently dodged her. “It’s nothing.”
The tall and slender figure of the young man was draped in a school uniform coat, seemingly unfazed by the cold of midwinter. Gu Yuan looked at him, her brows furrowing tighter and tighter.
Although she was busy with work and rarely came home, although Yu Luoyin always seemed indifferent to her… Gu Yuan could still keenly sense that something seemed off with him lately.
But with so many people around, it wasn’t appropriate to directly inquire about Yu Luoyin’s situation.
Gu Yuan pondered this, maintaining her smile as she turned back to continue greeting the others.
However, she couldn’t shake off this matter from her mind. As soon as there was a chance, Gu Yuan quickly grabbed Yu s.h.i.tian and led her to a corner.
“Hey, Auntie, what are you doing?” Yu s.h.i.tian, busy with her phone, pouted and complained without lifting her head or opening her eyes. “I’m supposed to meet friends to watch a movie. If we don’t leave soon, we’ll be late!”
Nowadays, young people have quite a lot of interests, as if their daily schedules are busier than those of national presidents.
Gu Yuan had spent almost her entire life doing research in the office. With a cool and stern personality, she strongly disapproved of the extravagant lifestyles of these young people, feeling that they were both boring and meaningless.
However, she currently needed help from someone, so she refrained from scolding Yu s.h.i.tian.
“Don’t go. Instead, go upstairs and ask your brother what’s going on.” Gu Yuan covered the phone in Yu s.h.i.tian’s hand to prevent her from staring at it, her voice heavy. “I feel like your brother has something on his mind lately. Go and subtly ask him about it, see if there’s anything going on at school.”
Yu s.h.i.tian paused at the request, turning her head to look at Gu Yuan with confusion. “Auntie, why don’t you ask him yourself?”
“He can’t be bothered to talk to me at all. Why would I bother him?” Gu Yuan chuckled briefly, her voice somewhat self-deprecating. “When you ask him, don’t mention that I sent you. Forget about the movie for now. I’ll give you some pocket money later.”
“Oh…” Yu s.h.i.tian rolled her eyes and, after a moment’s thought, agreed. “Alright.”
Actually, what truly convinced her to give up the movie wasn’t Gu Yuan’s promise of pocket money—she wasn’t lacking in money. It was Yu s.h.i.tian recalling the urgent request from Yu Luoyin on the third day of the Lunar New Year, asking her to quickly make him a bracelet.
At that time, she had teased Yu Luoyin about chasing girls, and he didn’t deny it.
But these past few days, Yu Luoyin’s mood had been strange, fluctuating dramatically—smoking angrily with a dark face and even getting beaten up… It was intriguing. Yu s.h.i.tian had an intuition that it had something to do with his ‘mysterious girlfriend’.
Her cousin, who had been idolized since childhood, had never been so ‘miserable’ before.
This misery wasn’t about his outward appearance, but rather Yu Luoyin’s recent mental state, which made Yu s.h.i.tian can’t help but feel a desire for ‘gossip’.
Agreeing to Gu Yuan’s request, she quietly climbed upstairs and stood outside Yu Luoyin’s bedroom door, knocking softly.
From inside came a cold voice, “Get lost.”
