Chapter 7 – Elixir

Hah-suhjin drew the chemical structures on a large paper, then he stared at it.  However, the Insight didn’t reveal the ident.i.ty of this chemical structures.  He didn’t know if it was the limitation of his Insight or it was his own limitation.  It was probably the latter.

“What is this?  It looks like a chemical structure for drugs…  Maybe it is a very effective anti-cancer drug?”

He looked at it for a very long time, but he couldn’t make heads or tails of it.  He had zero knowledge regarding chemistry and medicine.

“Why isn’t there only one structural formula?”

There were a total of 3 structural formulas.  Maybe it was saying there are three possible drugs instead of one.

Moreover, there was some words on the bottom written in Korean, so Hahn-suhjin was able to read it.

「Catalyst, King’s Blood.」

“Three structural formulas…… Moreover, a catalyst? What’s the meaning of this?”

Hahn-suhjin thought about it for a long time.

“Maybe after making this three ingredients, I have to mix in the King’s Blood to make a complete anti-cancer drug?”

Maybe the Insight might give him a more detailed answer. He waited in antic.i.p.ation, but unfortunately, there were no further reaction from the Insight.

“At least, I understand what the chemical structure is, but what is this King’s Blood?  Where can I get that?”

He didn’t know the meaning of the word, so Hahn-shujin got a headache.

He suddenly stood up.  He thought of something that would get him moving.

“Let’s go.”

Jinsung Pharmaceuticals.

Hahn-suhjin went to a branch of the Jinsung group.  It was a ma.s.sive conglomerate rated as the number one company in Korea.  This was why he had sought his first employment from this company.  The company he worked for was owned by the Jinsung group.  He worked in a factory manufacturing products for the Jinsung Electronics.

This was the reason why he looked up the Jinsung Pharmaceuticals.  He was familiar with the Jinsung brand, and it was the number one company within this country.

“Welcome.  What brings you in today?”

At the 1st floor lobby, the female help desk employee greeted him with a bright smile.

Since this was a branch of the Korea’s number one conglomerate, the building was s.p.a.cious and fancy. It made Hahn-suhjin feel a bit daunted, but he tried his best to confidently face her with  square shoulders.

“Excuse me.  I have chemical formulas I want to make into a drug, but I don’t have the facility to make such a thing.  Does the company perhaps take private orders?”

“I’m sorry, customer.  To my knowledge, our company doesn’t take private orders on the side.”

“I’ve heard if you go to a university and request it, they might produce small amounts of an experimental drug. In any case,  you will have to talk with the person in charge.  Of course, this means you will be requesting support from an academic inst.i.tute, so our company won’t have anything to do with it.  However, I will send a message up the chain on your behalf, but I cannot guarantee it will go through.”

The female employee spoke again in a friendly manner.  Hahn-suhjin gathered up his courage again, and he spoke words he had prepared beforehand.

“I just need a very small amount.  I will give the company adequate compensation.”

“Let me first send a message…….”

“I want to meet someone in charge. Just give me 10 minutes for a consultation. Tell him I’ll give him $50,000 for the consultation fee. I’ll give the consultation fee even if I don’t get a satisfactory answer.”

The female employee’s face froze in an instant.

No matter how she looked at him the man in front of her was in his mid-20s.  She had thought he was a normal college student, yet he was throwing around a large sum of $50,000 for a simple consultation.

The female employee’s expression changed immediately.

“Please wait here for a moment.”

She must have a.s.sessed there was some substance to this business.  After a moment, a man in his mid-40s quickly came down. His business card said he was ‘Deputy Administrator Park-hyunjoon.

Deputy Admin Park-hyunjoon flinched when he saw Hahn-suhjin.  The man was too young.

“Deputy Administrator. This is the person I was talking about.”

“This person?”

Park-hyunjoon looked at Hahn-suhjin with skeptical eyes.  The man was too young, and he was dressed too casually.  When he was told someone was offering $50,000 for a 10 minute consultation, he thought it might lead to a special request from the individual.  He was skeptical now as to whether he had misjudged the situation.

“h.e.l.lo.”

“Nice to meet you. I am Deputy Admin Park-hyunjoon.  Please come with me.”

First, he guided Park-hyunjoon to a cafe inside the building.  Park-hyunjoon ordered coffee and tea, then he brought the drinks to the table himself.  The moment he sat down Hahn-suhjin took out an envelope then he pushed it towards the other man.

“This is the consultation fee.”

“……let me confirm it for a brief moment.  Please excuse me.”

After he checked out the envelope, he let out a light grunt.  There were five bills inside worth $50,000.

‘It really is $50,000?  For a mere 10 minute consultation?’

He was sure now that he couldn’t judge the other person by his appearance.  Park-hyunjoon was more careful with his gestures, and he spoke in a more careful manner.

“Our company doesn’t usually do business with private individuals.  Moreover, we don’t make experimental drugs that was created by an individual. The exception is our company helps universities with inadequate lab equipments.  We create the chemical compounds for them.  However, the purpose is to help them further their academic research.”

“Yes.  This is why I came here.  The other Pharmaceutical companies didn’t even have programs like that.”

“Are you perhaps enrolled in a Pharmacy school?”

“No. There is a drug that I want to create for personal use.”

“You do realized there are incredibly strict laws regarding making and distributing experimental drugs?  If an individual rashly ran afoul of it…”

“I just want to conduct an experiment.  I just need a very small amount.”

“Mmmm……  Do you think I could see the chemical structure?”

Hahn-suhjin placed the paper with the chemical structures in front of him.  After checking the three structures carefully, Park-hyunjoon looked up.

“Two of the chemical structures are similar to already existing compounds.  It is similar, yet different…  The other one I’ve never seen such a structure.  This doesn’t look to be medicines, and I don’t see anything hazardous about it.”

“I’m not trying to use it as a drug.  I have to use it for a personal matter.”

“If it isn’t a hazardous material, then it wouldn’t be too hard to create these ingredients.  The only thing one needs is a reasonable cause.  Only then would the company  agree to manufacture this product.  For example, an academic inst.i.tute that needs help.”

“I’ll give you 1.5 million dollars.”

Hahn-suhjjin gave a figure that was close to his entire net worth.

After taking the taxes off the 2.5 million dollars from the lottery ticket winnings, he had 1.7 million dollars left.  He decided to save two hundred thousand dollars, and he was going to use the rest here.

‘Since this is a large corporation, they might dismiss a private request thinking it isn’t worth it.  I can’t let that happen…’

He had decided to gather a lot of money to break through any attempts at stonewalling him.  He didn’t care about money if he could live.

Park-hyunjoon’s expression stiffened.

“I don’t care  if the company or the Deputy Administrator takes the money.  I just need someone to make a small amount of these chemical compounds.”

“……since this isn’t for advancing academic research, the company will likely decline the offer.  They won’t manufacture anything for personal use.  However, there might be a way.  Let me personally look into it.  Could you give me your contact information?”

“I have it here.”

Hahn-suhjin saw Park-hyunjoon’s eyes shake.  It seemed he was trying to devise a way that’ll allow him to take the 1.5 million dollars for himself.

However, Hahn-suhjin didn’t care.  If Park-hyunjoon brought the correct 3 ingredients, he would deposit the money as recompense.

After a week, Park-hyunjoon contacted him.  Hahn-suhjin immediately headed out to meet him.

“It’s complete.”

Park-hyunjoon opened his bag, then he took out 3 containers.  In each container, there were clear liquids within.

“The company didn’t give consent, so I personally had to make it using the facility during breaks.”

Park-hyunjoon spoke as if he was giving an excuse.  Hahn-suhjin didn’t care.  He just stared at the content within the three containers.

When he focused his mind, the Insight activated.  The chemical structures started to form atop the containers.  When the chemical structures were a match, Hahn-suhjin let out a sigh of relief inside.

“Thank you.”

Hahn-suhjin took out a fat envelope.  Park-hyunjoon looked over the content with his eyes.  At a glance, he could tell there were over 100 bills inside the envelope.

“For your convenience, I intentionally withdrew the money in 10 thousand dollar bills.”

“Ah, thank you.”

“Do you want to count it?”

“No.  It’s all right.”

Park-hyunjoon couldn’t help, but bow.  The young man in front of him wore plain clothes, but he probably wasn’t some ordinary person.

‘Those compounds does nothing…  How is he going to use it?’

He was curious about that point, but when he looked at his fat stack of money, his curiosity disappeared.

‘Now I have the ingredients.’

After separating from Park-hyunjooon, Hahn-suhjin let out a sigh of relief.  He hugged his bag as if he was holding something very valuable.

“Did it say I needed a Catalyst called the King’s Blood?  What the heck is it?”
