Chapter 349: A Commoner
Could it have been because she saved Chen’s life? Chen was going to inherit the rank of Duke North, and he was doomed not to have love of his own. He needed a wife that could help him, even if that was not his favourite. Mrs. Duke North was thinking.
Nevertheless she still held a friendly look on her face in front of Zheng Chenyi. She just smiled and took up the book he had just placed next to her. “You have just woken up from death, don’t spend energy on reading! Just take a break!”
She was about to take away the book when she noticed the t.i.tle of the book, namely The Saint Divine Anecdotes. An angry expression hovered over her face and she sounded a little angry. “Since when did you start to read vulgar stories like this?”
Chen was an excellent boy. He was born with ambition. She did not care if anyone else was being vulgar and stupid, but her son could not.
Zheng Chenyi frownedly deeply. He did not like it when his mother snapped at this book just because she did not like it. Sword One got the book for him, and he read it instead of medical books when he was bored.
The book given by Sword One might be Lady Chaoyan’s. How could his mother say something like that!
“Give it back to me!” Zheng Chenyi was slightly furious, struggling to get up just to grab the book.
Mrs. Duke North was shocked. She instantly gave the book back to Zheng Chenyi. “Chen, don’t move, you are still injured!”
Zheng Chenyi put the book under his pillow directly, but he was still a little bit annoyed.
Mrs. Duke North panicked. She felt that maybe she was overly anxious. Chen had been an obedient boy since little, and he read and practised martial arts well. He had to be reading the book because he was feeling sick, and she should not have given him pressure out of excitement. That was her fault.
As she realized her mistake, Mrs. Duke North smiled. “I don’t mean that. I mean you can read the book when you are bored, but don’t forget about your mission, remember to read some military strategy books too, alright?”
Zheng Chenyi had the urge to ask his mother if those books could help him get onto the battlefield, but he stopped because he found the question quite boring.
He already knew the answer from someone else. His mother would not allow him to leave the capital, especially after what he had experienced this time.
“I spoke with Lady Chaoyan just now.” Mrs. Duke North started a conversation seeing that Zheng Chenyi was silent.
As Lady Chaoyan was mentioned, Zheng Chenyi’s eyes sparkled and he turned to his mother.
Mrs. Duke North felt panicked. Her dislike towards Gu Chaoyan increased. So her words turned out to be sharper.
“I thought that Lady Chaoyan was a calm girl who had no compet.i.tion against anything, but she likes jewelry.” Mrs. Duke North said with a smile, trying hard to make herself sound as if she was joking. “She saved your life, and we should pay her back. However, when I asked what she wanted, guess what she said?”
Zheng Chenyi gazed at his own mother motionlessly. He did not have much change happening to his face, but inwardly, complications stirred.
“She said that I can give her as much jewelry as I think your life’s value is. And she wants them all delivered to her place.”
