Best Dead, Lest Be A Hindrance (7)Qin Zhi Ai raised her eyelids slightly, and turned to glance at Jiang Qian Qian.
Jiang Qian Qian was fiddling with her phone and also happened to be looking at her direction at the same time.
Two pairs of eyes locked together and although neither said a word, Qin Zhi Ai could pick out an ‘I"ve got you cornered now[1]" gleam in Jiang Qian Qian’s eyes.
Yes, "Cornered.’
Jiang Qian Qian knew that Gu Yu Sheng didn’t like Liang Dou Kou and that it was impossible that he would come pick her up. Jiang Qian Qian also knew Liang Dou Kou wouldn’t dare to let her ring Gu Yu Sheng[2].
No matter what, she had won this round. Why wouldn’t she be thinking “I"ve got you cornered”?
Qin Zhi lightly pursed her lower lip. Forget it. If worse comes to worse, she’ll give up hitching a ride and call for a chauffeured car instead……
With that decided, Qin Zhi Ai gently lowered her eyes. Before Jiang Qian Qian could finish dialling the number, she indifferently said, “Yu Sheng never said he wouldn’t pick me up. He should be on the road right now.”
Jiang Qian Qian, who had now achieved her goal, let out a sound of surprise, and then put away her phone. Putting on fake display of friends.h.i.+p, she apologised, “Oh, so it was my misunderstanding. I was even thinking that Sheng-ge wouldn’t be coming to pick you up. Sorry Liang-jiejie.”
Qin Zhi Ai lightly drew in her lower lip and remained silent.
That girl, who had just asked Qin Zhi Ai how she would be getting home, said with a smile, “Xiao Kou, so President Gu[3] is coming to pick you up. Then I’ll be leaving now.”
“I’m be going too, Bye”
“Me too, See you later.”
In no time, there were only four people left in the room.
Qin Zhi Ai, Jiang Qian Qian, Lin Rong and Ms Lu[4] who was truly waiting for her husband to pick her up.
Because other people were still present, Qin Zhi Ai couldn’t ring for a car and quietly sat down on the sofa reading a magazine.
Jiang Qian Qian and Lin Rong sat on a sofa not too far away, whispering to each other. From time to time, Jiang Qian Qian would reveal a coquettishly cute smile.
When around half an hour had pa.s.sed, a flash of lightning suddenly streaked across the window, immediately followed by a deafening roar of thunder, reverberating down from the top of the building.
The weather was becoming worse and worse. Strong gusts of wind were blowing the trees so hard they were bent to verge of collapsing.
Before long, rain came bucketing down.
Qin Zhi Ai lifted her head from the magazine, slanted her head to look at the heavy rain outside the window and lightly knitted her eyebrows.
This was the outskirts of the city. If the rain was coming down this hard, wouldn’t it be very hard to call for a car?
Just as she had this thought, Ms Lu’s phone rang. Mrs Liu then said goodbye, grabbed her bag and hurriedly left.
Right after Mrs Liu left, Jiang Qian Qian and Lin Rong stood up from their sofa. “Liang-jiejie, we’ll be leaving too now.”
Jiang Qian Qian then pulled Lin Rong’s arm, and headed towards the door of the private room and pulled opened the door. As Jiang Qian Qian was walking out of the room, she turned her head, gave Qin Zhi Ai a flaunting smile, and then closed the door.
Seeing Jiang Qian Qian’s smile, Qin Zhi Ai instantly realised that the reason Jiang Qian Qian had stayed until the rain was coming down very hard was actually to make so that it’d be difficult for Qin Zhi Ai to call for a car, leaving her stranded in the outskirts due to the heavy rain……
[1] 胸有成竹(xiōng yǒu chéng zhú) An idiom meaning "to have a well-thought-out plan beforehand; have a card up one’s sleeves; have a contrivance ready" ie. You"ve thought up everything from every angle and possibility and formed a perfect plan to the finish (can see the outcome).
[2] Please note that instead of "Liang Dou Kou," the original uses "her/she." - "Jiang Qian Qian knew that Gu Yu Sheng didn’t like her. / Jiang Qian Qian also knew she wouldn’t" In Chinese, it is obvious the "her/she" is referring to Qin Zhi Ai but as this isn"t so obvious in English, "her/she" has been changed to "Liang Dou Kou". -Not "Qin Zhi Ai" since Jiang Qian Qian thinks Qin Zhi Ai is Liang Dou Kou.
[3] 总(zǒng) means head/highest person of the company. Could be chief, director, manager etc.
[4] Lu is Ms Lu"s maiden name - not her husband"s surname.
