That evening, Long Huojin drove Xue Guangli to the Rui Inst.i.tute, a large hospital containing a trauma centre, a rehabilitation centre, psych departments, and other rooms she couldn"t remember.
The Hospital stretched with large, towering buildings.
Xue Guangli held Long Huojin"s and tightened her grip around his fingers.
They both walked into the building, filled with offices to approach the secretary. Xue Guangli let go of his hand.
"h.e.l.lo," Xue Guangli greeted.
"How can I help you?" asked the receptionist.
"I am here to meet with Song Ren," she responded.
"Name?"
"Xue Guangli."
The secretary checked something on the computer. "Her s.h.i.+ft is over in ten minutes. She will be upstairs if you want to wait for her."
"Mhm," Xue Guangli said.
They both began to walk down the elevator when the secretary said, "Excuse me, sir. You can"t go. The meeting scheduled Miss Xue to speak with Song Ren."
Part of the plan was that Song Ren couldn"t be informed that Long Huojin was there.
Long Huojin was stuck for a moment before he smiled at the receptionist and began speaking to her.
"I am with Xue Guangli. We are here to discuss personal matters with Mrs. Su," he said.
The secretary eyed him curiously. He was handsome, she thought. Not many men that looked like him would ever walk through those halls.
"It is protocol," she said defiantly.
Long Huojin shot her a grinning smile. "I understand," he began sweet, low and husky. "A hard-working woman such as yourself shouldn"t have to bend the rules for anyone," he said. "Not even for someone like me."
The secretary flushed, and her chest rose and fell, but her eyes remained defiant.
"What"s your name, Mister?" she asked.
Long Huojin thought for a moment, before giving her a false name, "Xue Jin."
She then eyed the two of them. Were they related? They don"t look alike at all. Noticing her expression, Long Huojin said, "We are distant cousins."
The secretary then nodded and placed a clipboard in front of him and said, "Sign your name in." Before she added, "And your phone number."
Long Huojin gave her a sweet, race-winning smile before writing down the information she needed, and returned it to her.
Long Huojin signed it under "Xue Jin."
He then winked at the lady before he walked with Xue Guangli down the halls into the elevator. When the shaft closed, Xue Guangli questioned, "Cousins?"
Long Huojin chuckled.
Once they reached the top level, Long Huojin explained what he intended to do while she spoke with Song Ren. "I need you to put this device, on one of her computers," he said.
It was a small device, black and the size of a watch.
"This taps into her information wirelessly. While you are in there, the report has to download into it. It has to be done as close as possible."
"And what will you do?" she asked.
"I have to be the one searching for the report on my tablet. I don"t want to download everything. Otherwise, the security system will alarm the providers. Downloading one file would go unnoticed, but if I did all of them, Song Ren would find out."
"All right," Xue Guangli responded with a weary expression.
Long Huojin sat in a waiting room, pretending to read through his tablet when he was actually preparing to tap into the system. Luckily the firewall wasn"t as advanced as the network system of Long Group.
Long Huojin clicked his tongue. He then placed on his gla.s.ses to complete his disguise.
Meanwhile, Xue Guangli knocked on Song Ren"s office door. A moment later, she heard the door unlock, and Song Ren was in front of her with a smirk. She was wearing scrubs and a lab coat, and her long black hair was unbound.
"Come in," she said.
Xue Guangli said, "Thank you," before stepping in. Her office looked like a suite. It had a desk, bookshelves, posters of anatomy. Her degree and certifications hung on the wall. She had a fridge against the wall and couches in the middle of the room.
"Would you like a drink?" asked Song Ren.
Xue Guangli smiled, "Water should be fine."
Song Ren went to the cupboard to take a gla.s.s.
In the meantime, Xue Guangli had placed the device onto the desktop core, attached to the computer with a quick, fleeting swipe. She then turned around as Song Ren poured her a cup of filtered water.
Afterwards, Song Ren gestured her to sit. Xue Guangli sat in an armchair.
Song Ren approached her windows, opening it widely. "Do you smoke?" she asked Xue Guangli.
Xue Guangli shook her head, "No."
Song Ren nodded and lit her cigarette, inhaling a deep drag.
"Trouble in paradise?" asked Xue Guangli.
Song Ren exhaled and nodded her head. "My husband and I have been going through some issues," she said, walking over the seat across her and slumping on it. Where they sat was nowhere near the computer.
"What happened? If you don"t mind me asking," Xue Guangli responded.
Song Ren gave her a grim smile. "I"ve been experiencing some issues with infertility...At first, we weren"t trying to have children. But I found it to be a coincidence that I wasn"t getting pregnant when we..."
Xue Guangli smiled. "When you guys weren"t using protection?" she chided.
Song Ren smiled and nodded. "I didn"t tell him what I noticed. I wanted to do some tests first. But, my anxiety grew, and I was too afraid to tell him. So I began to see other doctors behind his back. When he found out, he wasn"t angry that I might be infertile, he was angry that I was going through this alone for more than a year."
"Oh," Xue Guangli said. She understood. Her husband felt excluded from the process. He wanted to be there for her.
"It seems like he loves you, unconditionally," Xue Guangli commented.
Song Ren smiled and sighed. "I love that b.a.s.t.a.r.d too. And I understand why he"s mad at me, but still, I was so afraid."
Xue Guangli listened and nodded as Song Ren continued to speak more about it.
"Anyways," Song Ren said. "Enough about me. Why are you here?" She asked.
Xue Guangli had forgotten to devise an excuse.
"I...I need some advice," she said.
"Oh?" Song Ren seemed intrigued. "About what?"
Xue Guangli flushed and looked away shyly. "Regarding Jin," she said.
"Long Huojin?" Song Ren said.
"Mhm," Xue Guangli responded.
Song Ren"s lips curled into a smirk. "Are you two dating?"
Xue Guangli blushed and nodded.
"Really?" Song Ren began, intrigued. "I knew that guy had it in him, and I was beginning to lose hope for the two of you."
"What do you mean?" Xue Guangli asked.
"Remember I was engaged to him?" Song Ren asked her.
Xue Guangli nodded, though, she didn"t want to remember.
Back then, Song Ren and Long Huojin were a power couple when she saw them at a charity event or in the public eye. They"re both beautiful and smart; their marriage could have been inevitable were it not for the fact that Song Ren left him.
"Long Huojin didn"t want to get married to me," she began. "At all."
Xue Guangli looked at her, eyes slightly widened.
"Our fathers arranged the union. I was in love with someone my father did not want me to have. Long Huojin was kind enough to allow me to pretend we were together so it could satisfy them," she trailed off, smiling as she reminisced the past. "If it weren"t for him. I would have lost the company I ran."
Xue Guangli"s lips opened. Long Huojin did that for her? That was the sweetest thing she"s ever heard about him thus far.
Long Huojin was known to destroy careers and companies for Long Group to come on top.
"I"m grateful to call him my friend," Song Ren said. "But there was one other thing I remembered."
Xue Guangli listened diligently, as Song Ren stared at her with curled lips. "When the two of us first met at the charity banquet years ago," she leaned in, unfolding her arms. "His eyes never left you. I watched him. You were with that boy. w.a.n.g Weimin was it? Yes. Long Huojin had his sights on you like a neglected puppy."
Xue Guangli"s eyes gaped.
Song Ren chuckled. "Man, you should have seen his face when I called him out. I said, "You like her!" and his face turned red."
That"s not possible, Xue Guangli thought. She and Long Huojin were not friends, they weren"t speaking. They hated each other. Or...was it that she hated him? That was almost two years ago. And to think it was one-sided. Had he been interested in her? It nearly broke her heart. He liked her...and she hated him.
Song Ren read her expression. "Did I say something wrong?" she asked.
Xue Guangli smiled grimly and shook her head. "No," she said. "Thank you for telling me that."
"I want the two of you to be happy. Long Huojin deserves it. You do, too."
"Thank you," said Xue Guangli genuinely.
"Now," Song Ren started again. "For some advice."
Song Ren went into telling her secrets of pleasuring a man. While hearing everything, Xue Guangli"s eyes widened both in awe and fear. She had never done stuff like that before...It was all new to her.
Xue Guangli then proceeded by asking questions, genuinely interested in the conversation.
Afterward, Xue Guangli took a moment to register everything in her mind. She did not notice that someone had entered the room. But shouldn"t the door be locked?
Song Ren"s expression changed, hardened, but weary. Xue Guangli turned around to see a handsome young man with beautiful, tousled blonde hair and ice-blue eyes.
The man greeted her politely before approaching his wife. Song Ren stood, and her chest rose and fell; Xue Guangli could see her heart pounding.
The man called Su Feng, her husband, embraced her hard. Song Ren had slowly responded to it and hugged him back, her expression filled with relief.
Xue Guangli slowly rose during their moment. She walked pa.s.sed the computer, slipping the device into her pocket and she left the room.
She found Long Huojin sitting another room, blended in, sitting next to other people who were all on their phones or devices.
She shot him a signal before she began walking away. Soon after, he followed and caught up.
"Did you get it?" She asked.
"Yes," he said.
They both went down the elevator and headed back to the house.
But as they walked towards his car, Xue Guangli walked behind him, watching him. She couldn"t believe what she learned today. She thought that Long Huojin could fall in love with her eventually, once they have dated for a while. But did he already like her that much?
She entered the car and fastened her seatbelt dazed until they arrived home.
